Cataño The City that's the "Prelude to the Capital"

Across San Juan Bay from the cruise port and the center of Old San Juan, and less than twenty minutes from Casa Buena Vista, Cataño proves the adage that the best things come in small packages.  Called "the prelude to the capital," Cataño and its promenade or "malecon" offers the best views of Old San Juan.  Isla de Cabras has the "forgotten" castle in San Juan Harbor that was once the counter battery to Castillo El Moro (and a really nice beach).  For .50 you can take the ferry every twenty minutes to Old San Juan and avoid both the traffic and the parking of the historic district (the best kept secret in Puerto Rico in our opinion),  And of course the rum-- as Cataño is the Puerto Rican home of the world famous Bacardi distillery.

Symbols of Cataño: The flag with its nine white and blue horizontal stripes, bearing a horizontal green and white band, representing the coconut palms on the coat of arms; a map of the municipality showing the locations of the two barrios or "townships" in this tiny municipality; the municipality's coat of arms based on the crest the Don Hernando de Cataño family, an hidalgo to whom the town owes its name.
