City of the Week: Naguabo

Just a short drive from the town of Ceiba (where the ferries to Viequez and Culebra are located) the charming town of Naguabo will put you in mind of beautiful things.

We all have our favorite Sunday drives. For me, the seaside town of Naguabo on Puerto Rico's Viequez Passage is a pure delight. Besides walking along the esplanade where the breeze is both mild and refreshing, the pastel houses and feisty restaurants make it seem like a San Tropez gone, if not quite bad, at least a little to seed. There is no glitterati here, and salsa music will be blaring in place of a soft crooning concertina, but the mountains rising up in the distance and the turquoise water lapping against the seawall will be just as entrancing as anything you may stumble upon along the French Riviera.

The heart of the experience in Naguabo is the "malecon" or esplanade (though it is often translated as "boardwalk" I have never seen a single malecon with any boards of any type). This promenade follows the coast above the sea wall, and offers a wide collection of restaurants, bars where people are drinking and dancing, several shops for buying things (not recommended) and of course-- unquestionable beauty. For those interested in more mundane facts Wikipedia has an excellent article on the subject of the town and its history and TripAdvisor has some great recommendations regarding food and activities. For us though the greatest charm is walking along the water and watching the many weekenders enjoying their Sunday afternoon just like us. It sure beats spending Sunday at the mall!!!
